Ghostzapper - 2003 Vosburgh (G1)

Ghostzapper - 2003 Vosburgh (G1)

Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel was already going to run in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on October 25th. But Saturday afternoon, Stronach Stable's Ghostzapper upped the boss' chances in the big race as he came within an eyelash of Belmont Park's track record for six and a half furlongs and won the 64th running of the Grade 1 Vosburgh under jockey Javier Castellano. Originally a seven-furlong event, the Vosburgh was shorted to six and a half furlongs and its purse increased from $300000 to $500000. Both changes seemed to suit Frankel and Ghostzapper, whose time of 1:143/5 was one-fifth of a second off the track record set in the slop by New Farm's Confide in an October 16, 1997 allowance. Off that race, Confide came back to run a troubled fifth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Hollywood Park, where he was beaten 3 ¾ lengths by Elmhurst. Ghostzapper, a son of 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Awesome Again, returned $8.20 for his fourth win in six career starts.
